چکیده

Our aim was to investigate the associations between management factors, compliance with current legislation, and herd-level calf mortality. In a national welfare audit, veterinary inspectors from Norwegian Food Safety Authority assessed legislation on (n = 912 herds). Nine criteria were rated as satisfactory (1) or not (0): housing, natural behavior, single pens, colostrum feeding, water, surveillance, illness/injuries, <5% mortality rate. addition, short questionnaire milk feeding for 3-wk-old calves distributed all audit herds, data disease recordings obtained Dairy Herd Recording System (NDHRS). A herd score (WCS) each farm constructed, summarizing results individual criteria. Most herds had high WCS (median 9.0, range 2–9). Fifty-six percent of (508/912) responded questionnaire. We performed cross-sectional study using set 431 available recorded events NDHRS, mixed-effects negative binomial model district random effect fitted data. Of 416 mortality, 108 (25.9%) reported no in 2016, median 6-mo rate 0.064 (interquartile 0–0.11) dead per 6 calf-months at risk, based NDHRS recordings. Calf rates higher whose did have free access water (incidence ratio 1.29; 95% confidence interval 1.02–1.64) that 1.31; 1.09–1.54). Neither nor any factors associated but more than half producers (59.6%) fed less currently recommended (8 L/d first 3 4 wk). These indicate lack rates. Herds registered incidence This finding may be linked suboptimal management, leading diseases mortality; it consultancy occurs too late only worst cases. There is room improvement dairy should provided young calves.

Calf mortality in Norwegian dairy herds.

The aims of this study were to estimate mortality rates in Norwegian dairy calves and young stock up to 1 yr of age, identify risk factors for calf mortality, and evaluate the etiology of calf mortality based on postmortem analyses. The material comprised 3 data sets. The first data set included information on 289,038 offspring in 14,474 dairy herds registered in the Norwegian Dairy Herd Record...

Reducing Dairy Calf Mortality

The loss of dairy calves from stillbirths and disease-related deaths places a significant challenge on the producer who wants farm-specific replacement heifers to maintain or expand herd size. Stillbirths are often overlooked as an important cause of calf mortality, as they are on some dairies. With improved record keeping, data analysis, diagnostic testing and herd monitoring, the appropriate ...

Housing system and herd size interactions in Norwegian dairy herds; associations with performance and disease incidence

BACKGROUND According to the Norwegian animal welfare regulations, it has been forbidden to build new tie-stall barns since the end of 2004. Previous studies have shown that cow performance and health differ between housing systems. The interaction between housing system and herd size with respect to performance and disease incidence has not been evaluated. METHODS Cow performance and health i...

α-Tocopherol and β-carotene concentrations in feed, colostrum, cow and calf serum in Swedish dairy herds with high or low calf mortality

BACKGROUND A study of herd-level risk factors for calf mortality in large Swedish dairy herds showed low serum concentrations of α-tocopherol and β-carotene in 1-7 day old calves to be more common in high mortality herds. Therefore, we aimed to investigate if calf mortality risk at herd level is associated with concentrations of α-tocopherol and/or β-carotene at individual level in feed, colost...
